Yukon Party Leaders Make Final Appeals as Election Approaches
URGENT UPDATE: As the Yukon election campaign reaches a critical juncture, party leaders are making their final pitches to voters ahead of the polls on July 15, 2025. With key issues like housing, cost of living, health care, and crime dominating discussions, the stakes could not be higher for the three main parties.
Mike Pemberton, leader of the Liberal Party, is vying for a historic third term, a feat previously achieved only by the Yukon Party. Pemberton’s campaign hinges on his party’s recent accomplishments, despite a significant turnover in candidates, with only one sitting Liberal seeking re-election. He emphasized a commitment to housing, pledging to expedite land development and support modular housing initiatives. “Assembling the team wasn’t an easy task,” Pemberton remarked, highlighting the challenges faced during the campaign.
Meanwhile, Currie Dixon of the Yukon Party is positioning his party for a comeback after nearly a decade in opposition. Dixon claims that the sentiment among Yukoners is shifting, stating, “I think for the first time in a long time I feel that we have a genuine shot in all 21 ridings.” His party aims to address affordability by proposing to roll back electricity rate hikes and scrap rent control, with an eye on increasing housing availability.
On the other side, Kate White of the NDP is pushing for a health care revolution, reflecting the concerns of constituents over the past 14 years. White criticized the Yukon Party’s previous governance, asserting that their time in power was marked by failures that left many Yukoners struggling. “Every time we’re telling these stories, they’re true,” she stated, emphasizing the need for accountability.
With the election just days away, all three leaders are intensifying their efforts to connect with voters. Pemberton aims to highlight his party’s achievements in health care, including plans to expand the Whitehorse General Hospital. Dixon promises immediate action on crime while pledging to enhance monitoring in the mining sector. White continues to advocate for health care improvements, including hiring more health professionals.
As the clock ticks down, Yukoners will soon decide their future. Voter turnout could be pivotal, and the outcome remains uncertain.
WHAT’S NEXT: Keep an eye on the voter turnout and the final polls as the election date approaches. Each party’s ability to mobilize supporters will be critical in these last moments.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops and the election results unfold.
