Zodiac Hemp Marks 25 Years in Golden, Celebrates Resilience
UPDATE: Zodiac Hemp, an iconic family-owned shop in Golden, is celebrating 25 years in business, reflecting on a journey marked by resilience and community loyalty. Established by Judy and her family, the store has evolved from a modest hemp gift boutique into a well-known destination for a diverse range of products, including smoking accessories and organic goods.
In an exclusive interview, Judy shared how she was inspired by The Still Eagle in Nelson to bring a similar vibe to Golden. “We were ready to move on from the restaurant industry and discovered the immense potential of hemp,” she explained. The store initially focused on selling hemp-based items, but customer demand quickly led to an expansion into smoking accessories.
As July 2023 marks this significant milestone, Judy emphasized the importance of community support in their success. “Our incredibly loyal customer base has been essential, especially during tougher times,” she stated. “People in Golden really care about the local businesses they love.”
The legalization of cannabis has also had a significant impact on their operations. While many assumed the change would shift public opinion dramatically, Judy noted, “Golden hasn’t changed much aside from legalization. The same customers who used cannabis before are now just doing so legally.”
Hemp, which contains less than 0.3 percent THC, is used across various industries, from textiles to bioplastics. This versatility makes it a sustainable alternative to many petroleum-based products. Despite the positive trends surrounding hemp, Judy mentioned that misconceptions still exist. “Many people still confuse hemp with cannabis, but they are fundamentally different,” she said.
The store’s commitment to maintaining a relaxed atmosphere while expanding its offerings has been pivotal to its longevity. “We chose not to pursue a cannabis license, as it would have changed our vibe entirely,” Judy noted. Instead, Zodiac Hemp continues to diversify its inventory, proudly carrying smoking accessories, organic Canadian tobacco, and unique gift items like hemp soaps and crystals.
Reflecting on the challenges faced over the years, Judy acknowledged the hurdles but emphasized a strong sense of community. “Strong customer service and word of mouth can make or break a small business,” she stated. “Without loyal customers, many local businesses would struggle to survive.”
As Zodiac Hemp celebrates its silver anniversary, the family remains optimistic about the future. “We’re excited for the next 25 years and the evolving vape industry,” Judy said. “Our advice for anyone looking to start a business in Golden is simple: find a niche that the community needs and listen to their feedback.”
With its rich history and commitment to sustainability, Zodiac Hemp has become a beloved fixture in Golden, demonstrating the power of local enterprise and community spirit. As they move forward, the family looks to continue offering healthier alternatives to traditional smoking methods, ensuring they meet the changing needs of their customers.
For those in Golden and beyond, the legacy of Zodiac Hemp is not just about celebrating a milestone; it’s about the enduring connections formed through shared values and the dedication to serving a community. This commitment has solidified Zodiac Hemp’s status as a beloved destination and a testament to the small-town spirit that defines Golden.
