NEW YORK CITY – The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby swept through the Tri-State area on Friday, unleashing heavy rain and powerful winds that toppled trees, delayed transit, and grounded flights. In response, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide State of Emergency in New York, while Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way issued a similar declaration for New Jersey effective at 6 p.m.

Immediate Impact

The severe weather prompted the New York Yankees to reschedule their game against the Rangers, now set for Saturday as part of a single-admission doubleheader. In Manhattan, inspectors were dispatched to investigate a construction elevator accident in Inwood, although no injuries were reported. The role of the weather in the incident remains unclear, but gusty winds were observed affecting the elevator.

“We’re asking New Yorkers, if you don’t have to be outdoors, don’t be outdoors,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “Particularly on our roadways, we had to do a number of rescues on the highways throughout the week.”

Key Details Emerge

Across the region, saturated ground and strong winds led to numerous reports of downed trees and power lines. From Paramus, New Jersey, to Westchester County and the Bronx, trees of various sizes crashed down, damaging homes and vehicles. In Whitestone, Queens, a large tree caused significant damage, narrowly missing a Con Ed worker and starting a small fire when it brought down power lines.

Transit Disruptions

New Jersey Transit experienced significant disruptions, with rail service suspended on the Morris and Essex Line and the Gladstone Branch due to downed trees. Limited service was available between Summit and Hoboken, and Montclair-Boonton Midtown Direct was operational. Metro-North’s Harlem Line faced temporary suspensions, while the LIRR cleared a downed tree on the Oyster Bay Branch, resuming train movement.

Flight Cancellations

The adverse weather conditions also affected air travel. By 9 p.m., LaGuardia Airport had canceled 227 flights, Newark Airport 174, and JFK Airport 173, with all three experiencing inbound flight delays averaging two hours. Travelers were advised to check with their carriers for updates.

Flight cancellations: 227 at LaGuardia, 174 at Newark, 173 at JFK

Background Context

The storm’s impact comes as the region has already been dealing with saturated grounds from previous weather events. The timing is particularly significant as utility workers from outside the state have been mobilized to address power outages, with equipment like new utility poles ready for deployment.

What Comes Next

As the storm continues to affect the area, officials urge residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The MTA has placed restrictions on empty tractor trailers on bridges, and utility crews remain on high alert to address power line threats.

With the remnants of Debby still making their way through the region, the focus remains on safety and restoration efforts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and official channels for the latest updates and advisories.
