B.C. Premier David Eby Promotes LNG and Mining to India
British Columbia Premier David Eby emphasized the province’s potential in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and mining sectors during a press conference on January 11, 2024, in Mumbai, India. Eby is currently on a six-day trade mission aimed at enhancing economic ties between British Columbia and India.
Eby highlighted that Indian mining and energy companies are increasingly interested in British Columbia’s resources. “They are looking strongly to LNG as one of their ways of reducing carbon intensity, as well as reducing smog in the country,” he stated. He pointed out specific projects that have garnered attention, including LNG Canada Phase 2, KSI Lisims LNG, and the under-construction Woodfibre LNG. Eby noted that these initiatives are reaching critical investment decisions in the coming year.
Addressing Local Security Concerns
The Premier also addressed the issue of rising extortion cases in British Columbia, particularly in Surrey. Eby mentioned the province’s extortion task force, which comprises the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). He indicated that an update from the task force would be provided next week, acknowledging his disappointment over the lack of recent communications regarding their progress.
“We have assembled a remarkable and historic task force,” Eby said, adding that the RCMP has increased its presence in Surrey. He highlighted that “there are more police in Surrey right now than there have ever been.” The Premier underscored the importance of collaboration between Canadian and Indian law enforcement, citing recent developments, including arrests and deportations related to extortion cases.
As of January 12, 2024, Surrey police reported 16 extortion incidents since the start of the year. Eby expressed a clear intention for improvement in law enforcement outcomes, stating, “We need better results; we need to see more arrests.” He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting police efforts in tackling these criminal activities.
Through his statements, Premier Eby aims to strengthen British Columbia’s international partnerships while addressing pressing domestic security issues.
