Flights at Lithuania’s main airports faced significant disruption over two consecutive nights due to suspected sightings of balloons believed to be involved in cigarette smuggling operations from neighboring Belarus. Disruptions and Cancellations at Airports

On the night of March 2, 2024, air traffic at Vilnius Airport was halted at 21:35 local time, with operations resuming around 03:30 the following morning. This suspension led to the cancellation of four flights and the diversion of seven others. The previous night, similar disruptions occurred at both Vilnius and Kaunas Airport, resulting in a total of ten cancellations and four diversions.

Authorities in Lithuania have reported that these balloon incidents have occurred multiple times in recent weeks, with notable disruptions also reported early on March 1. Each incident forced the closure of Lithuania’s two major border crossings with Belarus—Medininkai and Šalčininkai—for several hours.

Government Response and Security Measures

The Lithuanian government is taking these incidents seriously. Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has indicated that the country may need to consider extending the closure of its border with Belarus. In a meeting scheduled for March 4, Ruginienė will convene the National Security Commission to discuss potential actions in response to these disturbances.

Officials assert that clear warnings are being communicated to Belarus regarding the serious implications of activities that disrupt critical infrastructure. The head of Lithuania’s border guard recently noted that since the first sightings of these smuggling balloons in early 2023, there have been no reports of their use for transporting anything other than illegal cigarettes.

Lithuania, situated on the eastern flank of the European Union and a member of NATO, shares borders with both Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus. The government’s focus on enhancing border security reflects a broader concern over smuggling and its potential impact on national safety.
