More than 5,000 participants converged on Southcentre Mall in Calgary on October 1, 2023, for the 34th annual CIBC Run for the Cure, raising over $1 million for breast cancer research and support programs. This milestone marks the first time the Calgary event has surpassed the $1 million fundraising mark, making it only the second city in Canada, following Toronto, to achieve this feat.

Kirsty McGowan, the Calgary Run Director, expressed her excitement, stating, “We’re really excited to be the second site ever across Canada to hit $1 million. It’s a huge testament to the city and what it feels like to have the community come together for a great cause.” The vibrant atmosphere was palpable, with participants dressed in pink shirts and feather boas, creating a sea of pink throughout the event.

Organizers had set an ambitious target following last year’s total of $837,000. McGowan reflected on the efforts leading to this achievement, noting that many doubted the goal could be met. “Calgary is such a city of heart and community. It’s just really powerful to see it come together and be able to hit the goal,” she said.

Participants chose from one- or five-kilometre routes, with proceeds directed towards breast cancer research, patient transportation, wig programs, and other essential supports.

Personal Stories of Courage and Community

Among the participants was Danielle Walsh, who has been involved with the event for nearly 30 years. For Walsh, the run holds deep personal significance following the death of her sister from breast cancer at age 38 in 2000. “It’s a good cause, and it’s good community involvement,” she remarked. “It’s hope and opportunity for people who have breast cancer. It’s a sense of community, so people don’t feel alone.”

Walking alongside Walsh was her friend Karen Murphy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago during a routine mammogram. “It was just like, ‘Well, that’s rude,’” Murphy joked about her diagnosis. Now back to work and feeling healthier, she credits advancements in treatment to initiatives like the Run for the Cure. “This is why there’s been so much progress with breast cancer, and other cancers as well,” she stated. “They’ve made leaps and bounds with the treatments, so we definitely need this.”

Community Support and Fundraising Success

Near the finish line, over 60 supporters gathered under the banner of Celina’s Pink Power Warriors, a team formed to support Celina Hall, who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Hall, a mother of three, expressed her gratitude for the community’s response: “I’m overwhelmed with the love and support from people. It just goes to show that when you’re faced with a challenge, people really do pull together.” As of Sunday afternoon, her team had raised more than $20,000.

Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Canada, with an estimated one in eight facing a diagnosis in their lifetime. Since its inception in 1992, the CIBC Run for the Cure has raised over $507 million to fund breast cancer research and support programs nationwide. Donations to this important cause remain open through online platforms.

The success of this year’s Calgary event not only highlights the community’s dedication to combating breast cancer but also emphasizes the critical need for ongoing support and research. The incredible turnout and record-breaking funds raised demonstrate the power of collective effort in the fight against cancer.
