Canadian Crypto Fugitive Disappears After Arrest in Serbia
Canadian fugitive Andean Medjedovic has vanished following his arrest in Belgrade, Serbia, amid serious allegations of cryptocurrency fraud. Authorities in the Netherlands issued a European arrest warrant on December 11, 2023, claiming the now 21-year-old orchestrated a sophisticated hack that netted him an estimated $48 million US in digital assets. Medjedovic, originally from Hamilton, gained notoriety for using his exceptional mathematical skills to exploit vulnerabilities in two cryptocurrency platforms.
The timeline of his alleged criminal activity stretches back to late 2021, when he reportedly fled after defrauding Indexed Finance of $16.5 million US. Initial reports suggest that he utilized fake identification to execute the hack from a hotel in The Hague, where he checked in using a counterfeit Slovak passport. After the attack, he abruptly left the hotel, despite having pre-paid for his stay.
Life on the Run
For approximately four years, Medjedovic’s whereabouts remained largely unknown. Speculation about his location intensified after he made cryptic comments to journalists, referencing travels to Brazil, Dubai, and various unnamed islands. According to information obtained from the Belgrade Higher Court, he maintained a lavish lifestyle while on the run, with an estimated $65 million US in cryptocurrency at his disposal.
Kyle Armstrong, a former FBI agent now with blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, pointed out the difficulties of living exclusively off cryptocurrency. He noted, “To pay your rent, to buy a car, to travel, there are not many places willing to accept cryptocurrency.” Armstrong also mentioned that Medjedovic might have found ways to cash out portions of his digital fortune discreetly.
Medjedovic’s notoriety in the cryptocurrency community stems from his direct engagement with victims and onlookers, a departure from typical behavior seen in alleged hackers. After executing the hack on KyberSwap, he sent a public message to the platform, stating, “Negotiations will start in a few hours when I am fully rested. Thank you.” This behavior led to further scrutiny, as he rejected a bug bounty offered by KyberSwap, instead demanding complete control over the platform in exchange for a partial return of the stolen funds.
Extradition Attempts and Allegations
Following his arrest in Serbia, Medjedovic faced extradition proceedings initiated by Dutch authorities. He denied all accusations made against him, expressing a desire to remain in Serbia to build a life there. The Dutch extradition request outlined various criminal charges, including extortion and fraud, based on his alleged actions from a hotel in the Netherlands.
Despite a considerable international manhunt, the Belgrade Higher Court ultimately denied the extradition request, stating that Dutch prosecutors had not sufficiently proven his involvement in the crimes. A previously undisclosed filing from the U.S. Department of Justice indicated that authorities were closely monitoring his movements, with reports suggesting he may have fled to neighboring Bosnia shortly after his release.
While in custody, Medjedovic was reported to have continued engaging in cryptocurrency activities, with over $6 million US in crypto linked to his exploits being transferred through a mixing service. This raises concerns about ongoing illicit activities and the potential for further financial misconduct.
Medjedovic’s background reveals a precocious talent in mathematics, having graduated high school at just 14 and obtaining a master’s degree by 18. His exceptional skills, however, have drawn him into a world of criminality that has captured international attention.
The story of Andean Medjedovic serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding cryptocurrency regulation and enforcement. As authorities continue to pursue him, the question remains: can he successfully navigate the digital landscape without being caught?
