In a creative twist, KFC rebranded its popular Zinger Sandwich as the Dinger Sandwich for a limited time, coinciding with the baseball season’s excitement. “As part of the celebration, KFC is serving up a Free Dinger Sandwich through the KFC App the day after any Toronto home run with a $1 purchase,” Koutoulas added.

The Colonel’s look-alike, complete with a white suit and string tie, generated significant intrigue. At one point, a camera captured him holding a sign promoting the Dinger Sandwich. KFC Canada’s marketing strategy managed to blend nostalgia and modern engagement, with the Colonel’s cheerful presence intended to resonate with Canadian baseball fans.

“During the nation’s baseball fever, we knew we had to step up to the plate with something just as bold,” said Azim Akhtar, interim chief marketing officer for KFC Canada. “We decided to change the name of our iconic Zinger sandwich to the Dinger, celebrating the hits and the moments that bring fans together.”

This clever marketing tactic not only drew attention to KFC’s offerings but also provided a light-hearted distraction from the game itself.

The Impact of the Colonel’s Appearance

The Colonel’s appearance sparked numerous theories regarding his proximity to notable figures in the audience, such as Geddy Lee of Rush and Nav Bhatia, the Raptors Superfan. Ultimately, the goal was simply to celebrate the Dinger Sandwich and the thrill of baseball.

The actor portraying the Colonel, Rob Willis, has previously embodied the character in various television spots, making his presence fitting given that Colonel Harland Sanders lived in Mississauga until his death in 1980.
