Delta Air Lines has scheduled a notable increase in its domestic widebody flights for December 2024, with a total of 2,561 flights planned. This figure marks a 9.8% increase from the 2,332 flights recorded in December 2023. The expansion will provide an impressive 590,705 seats across the airline’s domestic network, reflecting an 8.8% year-on-year growth. This strategic move underscores the significance of the domestic market for Delta, one of the oldest and largest airlines in the United States.

Dominance of Boeing 767 in Delta’s Domestic Operations

The Boeing 767 family is set to dominate Delta’s domestic operations this month, with 1,962 of the scheduled flights being operated by these aircraft. This includes 189 flights using the 767-400ER and 1,773 flights with the 767-300ER variant. The 767-400ER will frequently connect Atlanta (ATL) to New York (JFK), with a daily service, while Miami (MIA) and Los Angeles (LAX) will see 28 and 26 rotations respectively from Atlanta.

The 767-300ER, which comprises the majority of Delta’s 767 fleet, is prominently featured on the transcontinental route between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX). This route will have an average of 6.7 flights per day, with 208 outbound and 209 inbound services scheduled. Delta recently announced enhancements to the in-flight entertainment on its Boeing 767-300ER jets, planning to introduce the Delta Sync seatback system next year, enhancing the passenger experience on these widebody aircraft.

Airbus A330 and A350 Models in the Lineup

Delta’s remaining domestic widebody flights this month will primarily utilize Airbus aircraft, with the majority being from the A330 series. The first-generation A330-200 will contribute 73 flights, predominantly on the JFK-LAX route. The A330-300 model leads in frequency, accounting for 401 flights this month, including daily services between LAX and JFK, as well as routes from Atlanta and Minneapolis (MSP) to Honolulu (HNL).

In a move to modernize its fleet, Delta has incorporated 39 A330-900s from the new A330neo series, which are 3.1 years old on average. These newer jets will operate 38 domestic flights in December, with the primary route being Phoenix (PHX) to Atlanta, featuring 15 round trips.

The Airbus A350-900, the newest addition to Delta’s fleet, will also make its presence felt this December with 87 domestic services. The A350 will operate 66 flights on the route between Atlanta and Los Angeles, with additional services to Salt Lake City and Honolulu.

Overall, Delta’s strategic increase in domestic widebody flights demonstrates its commitment to enhancing connectivity and capacity in the growing U.S. aviation market, providing passengers with more options and improved services during the busy holiday season.
