Denmark Summons U.S. Envoy Over Covert Operations in Greenland

Denmark’s Foreign Minister has summoned the top U.S. diplomat following reports of covert operations in Greenland by individuals connected to former President Donald Trump. The discussions come in response to a report by Denmark’s main national broadcaster, DR, which claimed that at least three Americans have been engaging in influence operations in the semi-autonomous territory.
Greenland, strategically located in the Arctic, has been a point of interest for the United States. In 2019, Trump expressed a desire to purchase the island, prompting a firm rejection from both Denmark and Greenland, which have reiterated that the territory is not for sale. The Danish government, a close NATO ally of the United States, has condemned any reports suggesting that the U.S. is conducting intelligence operations there.
According to DR, the allegations stem from unnamed government and security sources, as well as unidentified sources in both Greenland and the U.S. The report indicates that the individuals involved may be attempting to undermine Denmark’s influence within Greenlandic society. The broadcaster mentioned that it had obtained information from a total of eight sources but was unable to determine whether these Americans were acting independently or under instructions from higher authorities.
In the wake of these revelations, the Danish government has expressed serious concerns about the implications of such operations on the relationship between Denmark and Greenland. The situation highlights the delicate balance of international relations in the Arctic region, where geopolitical interests are increasingly at play.
This incident marks a significant moment in U.S.-Danish relations, emphasizing the importance of transparent communication between allied nations. Both governments are expected to address the matter further in upcoming discussions, aiming to maintain the integrity of their diplomatic ties and ensure mutual respect for sovereignty.
