Discover the World’s Longest Military Air Force Runways
The world’s longest military air force runways are not just a matter of numbers; they reflect strategic importance and operational capabilities. Identifying these runways can be complex due to the presence of dual-use airports, which serve both military and civilian purposes. This article focuses on military-specific runways while also recognizing significant dual-use facilities.
Notable Long Military Runways
The United States dominates the list of the longest military runways, primarily due to its extensive investment in air defense and space operations. The longest dedicated military runways are primarily located in the US, with a few notable exceptions in other countries.
One such example is the Ben Guerir Air Base in Morocco, which boasts a runway length of 15,720 feet (4,791 meters) when including its overruns. Established in 1951, this airbase initially served as a site for the United States Air Force and played a crucial role as a Transatlantic Abort Landing site for the Space Shuttle. Today, it is a vital operational base for the Royal Moroccan Air Force, housing multiple F-16 Fighting Falcon squadrons.
Another significant facility is Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, with a runway measuring 14,530 feet (4,429 meters). This base is known for its Arctic training exercises, including the renowned Red Flag operations, which see participation from various allied air forces. The extended runway length accommodates heavy aircraft loads essential for operations in extreme weather conditions.
Leading Space and Air Force Bases
The Vandenberg Space Force Base, formerly a US Air Force installation, features a runway of 15,000 feet (4,572 meters). While primarily used for space launches, it also supports military strategic airlift missions. This facility’s historical significance dates back to 1941, and it continues to play a vital role in space operations.
“Vandenberg has been pivotal in supporting both military and civilian space missions,”
said a representative from the Space Launch Delta 30.
Edwards Air Force Base stands out with its longest paved runway measuring 15,024 feet (4,579 meters). This base is renowned for testing experimental aircraft and has been a historical site for numerous aviation milestones, including the breaking of the sound barrier by Chuck Yeager. The base’s extensive Rogers Dry Lakebed stretches over 39,060 feet (11,905 meters), although it is not officially classified as a runway.
In China, Shigatse Peace Airport holds the record for the longest dual-use runway at 16,404 feet (5,000 meters). Located in Tibet, this airport serves both military and civilian operations and is strategically important for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
These airbases underscore the critical role of military airpower in global security, showcasing the lengths to which nations go to ensure operational readiness and strategic advantage. As military technology evolves, the infrastructure supporting air operations will continue to adapt, emphasizing the importance of long and robust runways.
