Hamilton Police Capture Alleged Killer of Belinda Sarkodie Agyemang
Hamilton Police have apprehended a suspect in the murder of Belinda Sarkodie Agyemang, who was tragically shot while enjoying an afternoon with a friend in downtown Hamilton on July 11, 2025. The alleged perpetrator, a 17-year-old who had been on the run for several months, surrendered to authorities on November 18, 2025. Police had been actively pursuing him since the incident, which left the community in shock and mourning.
Authorities reported that Belinda, a 26-year-old newcomer from Ghana, was struck by a bullet intended for someone else. In a statement, Hamilton Police emphasized the senselessness of her death, highlighting the impact on her family and friends. The department had intensified its search efforts over four months, with Chief Frank Bergen stating, “He had to have felt our breath,” referring to the pressure placed on the suspect.
During a news conference, Chief Bergen expressed concern over youth violence, stating, “If a 17-year-old feels it’s OK to bring out a gun in the afternoon amongst hundreds of people to settle a dispute, then we’ve got a problem.” He characterized the alleged shooter as an “entitled young punk” who callously took the life of an innocent woman.
The young offender, whose identity is protected by law, faces charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. These allegations are yet to be tested in court. This incident marks a troubling trend in Hamilton, where gun violence has increasingly affected innocent bystanders. Earlier this year, another tragic incident saw Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old international student from India, killed in a similar manner while waiting at a bus stop near Mohawk College.
The emotional toll on Belinda’s family has been profound. Det.-Sgt. John Obrovac remarked on their suffering, stating, “The Sarkodie family has suffered an unimaginable loss, and our thoughts remain with them.” A GoFundMe campaign set up in her memory has raised approximately $12,000, reflecting the community’s support. The campaign described Belinda as known for her kindness and warmth, noting that her life was senselessly cut short in a random act of gun violence.
The impact of Belinda’s death resonates throughout Hamilton. The incident has sparked outrage and sadness among residents, who are grappling with the reality that such violence can affect anyone, even those simply going about their daily lives. While the apprehension of the suspect provides a measure of relief, it is clear that the quest for justice is far from over.
As the legal process unfolds, community leaders and residents alike continue to advocate for measures aimed at preventing further tragedies. The loss of Belinda Sarkodie Agyemang serves as a somber reminder of the urgent need for efforts to address gun violence and protect innocent lives.
