Harrow Fair Pie Auction Raises $118,150 for Children’s Centre
The annual Brad and Joanne Stannard Memorial Pie Auction at the Harrow Fair on August 28, 2023, raised an impressive total of $118,150 to support the John McGivney Children’s Centre. This significant contribution will fund specialized pediatric rehabilitation services for children and youth facing physical, neurological, and developmental challenges.
Cathy Mombourquette, the centre’s manager of communications and fundraising development, emphasized the importance of these funds in continuing the centre’s mission. “For over 45 years, we’ve been proud to offer these vital services,” she stated. Jennifer Jovanovski, CEO of the John McGivney Centre, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the impact of community support. “This incredibly generous contribution ensures we can continue enabling every child we serve to reach their fullest potential.”
The pie auction has a rich history, having been initiated nearly 30 years ago by the Stannard family in memory of their late son, Todd. Todd, who was born with spina bifida, benefited from programs provided by the Red Cross, which were the precursors to the John McGivney Centre. The inaugural auction raised just $350, a stark contrast to this year’s achievement, which exceeded the previous year’s record of $117,500.
Continuing the family legacy, Mark and Lisa Stannard, along with their sons, Philip and Owen, spearhead the auction each year. Their efforts, along with contributions from local bakers, auctioneers, and generous donors, make the event a community highlight. Jovanovski expressed gratitude towards everyone involved, saying, “Our heartfelt thanks go to the dedicated bakers, spirited auctioneers, generous donors, and the entire community. Together, we’re transforming lives, one pie at a time.”
The Harrow Fall Fair, now in its 171st year, is one of the oldest fairs in Canada and runs until Sunday. The pie auction remains a key event, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting local children with essential rehabilitation services.
