Hawaiian Airlines Considers Airbus A220 and Embraer E195-E2 for Fleet Renewal

Hawaiian Airlines is evaluating options for replacing its aging fleet of Boeing 717s, with the Airbus A220 and Embraer E195-E2 emerging as potential candidates. Founded in 1929, Hawaiian Airlines is the largest and longest-serving airline in Hawaii, operating out of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). Currently, the airline has 19 Boeing 717s, which average around 22 years in service, making them some of the oldest aircraft in its fleet.

With a maximum passenger capacity of 128, the Boeing 717 serves as the smallest aircraft in Hawaiian Airlines’ lineup, which includes larger models such as the Boeing 787-9. According to data from ch-aviation, the airline’s current fleet consists of 65 aircraft, including 18 Airbus A321neos and 24 Airbus A330-200s. The need to update the 717s is becoming increasingly pressing as operational costs and passenger expectations evolve.

Examining the Airbus A220

The Airbus A220 is noted for its efficiency, comfort, and performance, making it a strong contender for Hawaiian Airlines. Originally developed by Bombardier and rebranded after Airbus acquired a majority stake in 2018, the A220 first entered service in July 2016. Its spacious cabin design features a 2-3 seating configuration, providing wider seats and larger windows, enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan engines, the A220 boasts a fuel efficiency that is up to 25% lower per seat than older aircraft models. The A220-300 variant has a range of approximately 3,900 miles, sufficient for Hawaiian Airlines’ flights to major destinations on the US West Coast, such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

Evaluating the Embraer E195-E2

On the other hand, the Embraer E195-E2, which entered service in 2019, is the largest member of the next-generation E-Jet family. The E195-E2 is designed for short- to medium-haul routes and features similar fuel efficiency as the A220, offering up to 25% lower fuel burn per seat compared to earlier models. Depending on the configuration, this aircraft can accommodate up to 146 passengers.

The E195-E2 provides operational flexibility that aligns well with Hawaiian Airlines’ needs, particularly for interisland routes. Its range of around 2,900 miles makes it suitable for many of the airline’s regional operations, while its 2-2 seating layout ensures every passenger has either a window or aisle seat, enhancing comfort during flights.

Both aircraft present compelling options for Hawaiian Airlines. The A220’s greater range and capacity may appeal to the airline’s need for longer-haul services, while the E195-E2’s efficiency and seating configuration make it suitable for high-frequency routes.
