Hollywood Stars Gather for 82nd Venice Film Festival Kickoff

The 82nd edition of the Venice Film Festival begins on September 6, 2023, welcoming some of Hollywood’s most prominent stars to the picturesque city of Venice, Italy. This prestigious event is renowned for showcasing international cinema and often serves as a key player in the awards season, making it a significant stop on the road to the Oscars.
Established in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is recognized as the oldest film festival in the world and is second only to the Cannes Film Festival in terms of prestige. Initially a non-competitive event, it has evolved into a major annual attraction, drawing attention with films that often contend for top honors at the Academy Awards. The festival’s history includes iconic films like “Grand Hotel” and “It Happened One Night,” with the coveted Golden Lion award being introduced in 1949.
This year’s festival kicks off with the opening night film, “La Grazia”, directed by Paolo Sorrentino. The event will run until September 6, when the award winners will be announced. Among the stars expected to walk the red carpets are Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Emma Stone, Dwayne Johnson, Adam Sandler, and Idris Elba. Notably, it marks the first appearance at the festival for Roberts, who stars in the #MeToo-themed drama “After the Hunt”, and Johnson, who portrays MMA fighter Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine”.
Key Films and Competitions
This year’s competition features a diverse lineup, including major films from industry heavyweights such as Guillermo Del Toro, Kathryn Bigelow, and Noah Baumbach. Netflix, returning after a hiatus, is competing with three films: “Frankenstein”, “A House of Dynamite”, and “Jay Kelly”. Other noteworthy entries include:
– Kaouther ben Hania’s “The Voice of Hind Rajab”
– Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia”
– Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother”
– Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice”
The festival is also set to honor legends of cinema, with lifetime achievement awards going to Kim Novak, known for her role in “Vertigo,” and acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog.
Venice’s Unique Setting
The festival takes place on the Lido, a barrier island that is about a 20-minute ferry ride from Venice’s iconic landmarks. Known for its luxurious hotels, including the historic Hotel Excelsior, the Lido has long been a favorite among European aristocrats. Other notable accommodations include the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, the Hotel Danieli, and the Gritti Palace, each with its own rich history and connection to the festival.
Festivalgoers often arrive by private water taxis, navigating the waterways that separate the venues and hotels. Unlike Venice’s main island, where vehicles are prohibited, the Lido allows for private cars and buses, making transportation more accessible for attendees. Many choose to explore the area by bicycle, embracing the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
The main competition jury, led by Alexander Payne, includes a diverse group of international filmmakers, such as Brazilian actor Fernanda Torres and Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof. The winners will be announced on September 6, further solidifying Venice’s reputation as a launching pad for Oscar contenders.
With its rich history, dazzling red carpets, and a lineup of films that hold great promise, the Venice Film Festival continues to be a highlight in the global film calendar. As the stars gather, industry insiders and fans alike eagerly await the cinematic treasures that will emerge from this year’s event.
