Israeli Airstrike Kills Houthi Prime Minister in Sanaa Attack

An Israeli airstrike has resulted in the death of Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. According to the Iran-backed Houthi group, the attack occurred on Thursday, claiming the lives of al-Rahawi and several ministers during a government workshop aimed at assessing its activities over the past year.
The Israeli military confirmed the strike, stating it targeted a “Houthi terrorist regime military target” in Sanaa. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which has seen the Houthis increasingly engaged in military operations against Israel, particularly in the context of the recent war involving Hamas in Gaza.
Details of the Airstrike
The Houthi statement highlighted that the airstrike occurred while members of the government were conducting a routine evaluation of their performance. Al-Rahawi had been serving as prime minister since August 2024. The attack reflects the broader regional tensions, with the Houthis claiming that their missile launches against Israel are acts of solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
Earlier this week, Israeli airstrikes had already targeted various locations in Sanaa, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and over 102 injuries, according to the Houthi-run Health Ministry. This pattern of violence has persisted despite Israel’s missile defense systems successfully intercepting many of the projectiles launched from Yemen.
Impact on Regional Dynamics
The Houthis, once a relatively small faction in Yemen—one of the world’s poorest nations—have evolved into a powerful force, capable of disrupting maritime traffic in the Red Sea with support from Iran. As they continue to launch missiles at Israel, the group demonstrates its capability and ambition to play a significant role in Middle Eastern geopolitics.
This latest event underscores the complex interplay of regional alliances and hostilities, as the Houthis position themselves as significant players in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The international community remains watchful, aware that these developments could have lasting implications for security in the region.
