Louvre Museum Closes Offices and Gallery Due to Structural Issues
The Louvre Museum in Paris announced on March 18, 2024, that it is temporarily closing certain employee offices and one public gallery due to concerns regarding structural fragility. This decision comes as the museum, the world’s most visited cultural institution, prepares for significant renovations that were disclosed earlier this year.
According to a technical report submitted to museum management last Friday, there are concerns about the “particular fragility of certain beams holding up the floors” in the second level of the southern wing of the Louvre’s Sully wing. The report cited “recent and unforeseen developments” that prompted the precautionary measures, although specific details were not provided.
As a result of these findings, the museum has decided to restrict access to the second-level offices, where approximately 65 employees work. They will be temporarily relocated for three days while experts conduct a thorough assessment of the structural integrity. In addition, the museum will close the Campana Gallery, which is located directly below these offices and showcases antique Greek ceramics, as a further safety precaution.
The closure occurs against the backdrop of the museum’s ongoing recovery from a high-profile heist last month involving crown jewels valued at over $100 million. This incident has added to the urgency of ensuring that the museum’s infrastructure is secure before embarking on the planned renovations.
Modernization of the Sully wing is one of the key priorities outlined in the renovation strategy announced in January 2023. The goal is to enhance visitor experience while safeguarding the museum’s historic collections. As the Louvre navigates these challenges, it remains committed to preserving its status as a leading cultural institution while ensuring the safety of both its staff and visitors.
