Man Arrested After Weapon Threats at University of Manitoba Stadium
A man has been taken into custody following a threatening incident involving weapons at the University of Manitoba’s track and field stadium on July 12, 2023. The situation unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when campus security intervened to remove a man displaying aggressive behavior in the stands at the stadium, located on Chancellor Matheson Road.
When security personnel approached the individual, identified as Arbin Duku Muhaxheri, aged 45, he refused to comply and escalated the situation. Reports indicate that he pointed a hand-made weapon and brandished a rock towards three security officers and a coach who were present on the field. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during the incident.
Emergency responders from the Winnipeg Police Service’s West District were dispatched to the scene, supported by the Tactical Support Team and the K9 Unit. Upon arrival, officers located Muhaxheri hiding in a nearby retention pond. Despite efforts to communicate with him for nearly an hour, he did not emerge until law enforcement intervened.
The police later confirmed that Muhaxheri does not have any affiliation with the University of Manitoba. Given the nature of his behavior, officers sought a medical assessment for the suspect.
As a result of the incident, Muhaxheri faces serious charges including four counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order. He is currently in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
The university community and local authorities have expressed relief that no one was harmed during this alarming episode, highlighting the effectiveness of the security measures in place.
