Mariah Carey’s Christmas Hit Generates Up to $3 Million Annually
Mariah Carey’s iconic holiday song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” continues to be a financial powerhouse, earning an estimated US$2.5 to US$3 million annually. Since its release in 1994, the track has established itself as the most-streamed holiday song of all time. According to Forbes, Carey has accumulated over US$60 million in royalties from the song since its debut on her fourth studio album, Merry Christmas.
The festive classic has resonated worldwide, topping charts in 26 countries and becoming a staple in holiday playlists each year. In 2022, Billboard estimated that Carey generated at least US$2.7 million from the song’s continued popularity. Its enduring appeal is reflected in the nearly 800 million views on its official YouTube video, launched in 2009.
As the holiday season approaches, Carey marks the occasion by announcing its arrival on social media. This year, she playfully featured an elf mischief in a video, where she humorously sang the phrase “it’s time” while riding off in a sleigh.
Annual Concerts and Cultural Impact
In addition to her social media engagements, Carey has a long-standing tradition of performing during the holiday season. Her latest concert series, titled Mariah Carey’s Christmas Time at Dolby Live in Las Vegas, runs from November 28 to December 13, 2023. This concert series has become a hallmark of the season, attracting fans eager to hear her perform the beloved track live.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” made history in 2021, when it became the first holiday song to receive the Recording Industry Association of America’s Diamond Award, recognizing over 10 million sales and streaming units in the United States. This accolade underscores the song’s status as a cultural phenomenon.
Carey further celebrated the song’s legacy during the Billboard Music Awards in 2023, where she performed the track for the first time at an awards show, supported by her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. They presented her with a special Billboard Chart Achievement award, acknowledging the song’s extraordinary success.
Cover Versions and Ongoing Popularity
The song’s influence extends beyond its original rendition, becoming one of the most covered modern Christmas pop songs. In 2011, Carey collaborated with Justin Bieber for a duet version featured on his album Under the Mistletoe. Canadian singer-songwriter Michael Bublé also released his own rendition in the same year, further solidifying the song’s place in holiday music.
Featured in popular films like “Love Actually,” “All I Want for Christmas Is You” continues to be a defining element of contemporary Christmas celebrations. As the song once again fills the airwaves, its blend of nostalgia and joy ensures that it remains a cherished part of the holiday season for fans around the world.
With its impressive financial returns and cultural impact, Mariah Carey’s festive hit shows no signs of slowing down, promising to delight listeners for years to come.
