Mikie Sherrill, the four-term congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot, will be inaugurated as New Jersey’s 57th governor on January 16, 2024. Sherrill’s election victory in November was framed as a rejection of former President Donald Trump‘s policies, marking a significant political shift for the state.

At 54 years old, Sherrill becomes only the second woman to hold the governorship in New Jersey’s history, following Christine Todd Whitman, who served as governor from 1994 to 2001. She also makes history by being the first individual from a major political party to be elected to a third consecutive term in over six decades, succeeding fellow Democrat Phil Murphy.

Sherrill’s campaign focused on economic issues, particularly the rising costs of living, which she attributed in part to Trump’s tariffs. She has pledged to take immediate action upon taking office, promising a freeze on escalating utility rates. Her inauguration will take place in Newark, the state’s largest city, which was crucial to her electoral success. This marks a departure from previous inaugurations that typically included military salutes along the Delaware River in Trenton.

The political landscape is poised for change as Sherrill assumes leadership. Her inauguration coincides with Abigail Spanberger taking office as Virginia’s governor after a significant victory against her Republican opponent. Democrats are optimistic that Trump’s influence may negatively affect Republican candidates in upcoming key races.

Sherrill takes over from Murphy, a former ambassador during the Obama administration, who completed two terms characterized by progressive initiatives. During his tenure, Murphy implemented policies such as raising taxes on incomes exceeding $1 million, increasing the minimum wage, and expanding early childhood education. He leaves behind a budget that has grown significantly over the years, raising concerns about potential revenue shortfalls and an unfunded property tax relief program initiated during his second term.

In his final press conference, Murphy emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, stating that he has maintained regular communication with Sherrill. “We were who we said we would be,” he remarked, referencing his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises.

Sherrill’s administration will work alongside a Democrat-led Legislature, reflecting a broader trend where the party controls both the governorship and the legislature in over a dozen states. The governorship in New Jersey has frequently alternated between parties, with the last time a single party won three consecutive gubernatorial elections dating back to 1961.

As Sherrill prepares to take the oath of office, she stands at the forefront of a pivotal moment in New Jersey’s political history, ready to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
