Norfolk County OPP is investigating a series of thefts at local cemeteries, including the disturbing case of a stolen urn. Over the past week, items made of brass and bronze, such as name plates and screws, have been taken from several burial sites, prompting concern among officials and residents alike.

Details of the Thefts

On Tuesday, Const. Andrew Gamble, the community engagement officer for Norfolk OPP, reported that multiple cemeteries have been targeted. “These acts are deeply concerning and cause additional hardship for families already dealing with the loss of loved ones,” he stated. The thefts occurred at notable locations including Bayview Cemetery in Port Rowan, Sacred Heart Cemetery in Langton, Port Dover Cemetery, and Delhi Cemetery.

Gamble highlighted that this is not the first instance of theft in recent weeks. Last week, he reported that bronze headstones were stolen from both Bayview and Sacred Heart cemeteries. The police are urging community members and visitors to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Community Response and Reporting

Norfolk OPP is calling on those who visit or live near these cemeteries to be alert for unusual behavior. Const. Gamble emphasized the importance of community involvement in safeguarding these sacred spaces. “We’re asking people in our community to remain vigilant,” he said.

Anyone with information regarding these thefts is encouraged to contact the Norfolk County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. For those wishing to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at helpsolvecrime.com.

The ongoing investigations aim to address these troubling incidents and restore peace of mind to families mourning their loved ones. The Norfolk County community is reminded of the significance of cemeteries as places of remembrance and the need to protect them from such violations.
