Ottawa Man Faces Multiple Charges Following July Crash
An Ottawa man has been charged with several offences following a serious vehicle collision in the city’s east end on July 3, 2023. According to the Ottawa Police Service, Guy Lavergne, aged 35, faces charges including impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, flight from a peace officer, and five counts of driving while prohibited.
On the evening of the incident, a vehicle was reported travelling at a high speed on Highway 417. Shortly thereafter, it collided with another vehicle near Star Top Road. Both Lavergne and a female passenger in her 20s sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment.
Investigation Underway by Authorities
The collision has prompted an investigation by Ontario’s police oversight agency, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU stated that preliminary information indicated that the situation began when an officer from the Ontario Provincial Police attempted to stop Lavergne’s vehicle on Highway 417. The SIU’s involvement is standard procedure when there is a serious incident involving police action.
As of July 25, the Ottawa Police Service confirmed that their investigation remains ongoing. The SIU’s website also indicated that their inquiry into the crash continues, reflecting the seriousness of the incident and the potential implications for public safety.
This incident underscores broader concerns regarding impaired and dangerous driving, particularly in urban areas where high-speed collisions can have devastating consequences. Authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any reckless driving behaviour to help prevent future accidents.
As the investigation unfolds, more information may be revealed regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash and the actions taken by law enforcement.
