Police Arrest Protesters Supporting Banned Group Palestine Action

Police arrested demonstrators in London on March 9, 2024, as they gathered outside Parliament to express support for the group Palestine Action, which the government has classified as a terrorist organization. The protest was organized by the campaign group Defend Our Juries, which estimated that around 1,500 people participated, carrying signs that stated, “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.”
Within minutes of the gathering, police began detaining participants. Onlookers responded with chants of “Shame on you” and “Met Police, pick a side, justice or genocide.” The Metropolitan Police issued a statement on social media, highlighting that “expressing support for a proscribed organization is a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act” and that they would make arrests where offences were observed.
Background and Legal Context
This protest follows previous demonstrations, where more than 700 individuals were arrested, and 138 people have been charged under the Terrorism Act. The government designated Palestine Action as a proscribed organization in July 2023, following an incident where activists vandalized planes at a Royal Air Force base. The activists claimed their actions were in protest against the UK’s support for Israel during its military offensives in the Gaza Strip.
During Saturday’s event, demonstrators included individuals like Mike Higgins, a 62-year-old blind man who uses a wheelchair. Higgins was previously arrested under the Terrorism Act and returned to protest again, stating, “And I’m a terrorist? That’s the joke of it.” He added, “Of course I’ll keep coming back. What choice do I have?”
The group Palestine Action disputes the government’s classification, asserting that it is a peaceful protest organization and has initiated legal action to challenge the ban. This ongoing legal battle underscores the tension between civil liberties and government security measures in the UK.
Public Reactions and Broader Implications
The public’s reaction to the police response to the protest highlighted a deep divide over the treatment of activists and the right to protest. Many who gathered acknowledged the risks involved, yet they felt compelled to voice their opposition to government policies regarding Palestine. The demonstrators’ slogans and chants reflected a broader sentiment of frustration with the political landscape concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
As arrests continue and the legal battle unfolds, the implications for similar protests and the government’s stance on civil liberties remain significant. The ongoing situation has sparked discussions on the balance between national security and the right to freedom of expression, especially regarding sensitive geopolitical issues.
The events surrounding the protest illustrate the complexities of navigating public dissent in a rapidly evolving political climate. As demonstrators vow to continue their efforts, the future of Palestine Action and similar movements hangs in the balance.
