Pope Leo XIV Embarks on Peace Mission to Turkey and Lebanon

Pope Leo XIV has embarked on his inaugural foreign trip, visiting Turkey and Lebanon from November 27 to December 2, 2023. This visit honors the late Pope Francis’ vision to commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a significant moment in Christian history, while delivering a message of peace amid ongoing global conflicts, notably the war in Ukraine and rising tensions in the Middle East.

In Turkey, the Pope’s itinerary includes a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, followed by three days of ecumenical and interfaith dialogue in Istanbul. The purpose of the trip extends beyond mere commemoration; it seeks to strengthen Christian unity and promote peace in a region that has seen considerable strife and shrinking Christian communities over the years.

Historical Significance and Religious Unity

The Council of Nicaea, convened in 325 AD, established the first version of the Nicene Creed, a foundational statement of faith recited by millions of Christians each week. For the Vatican, this anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of unity among Christian denominations in today’s fragmented religious landscape.

Lebanon, with its tradition of religious tolerance, represents a crucial ally for Christians in the Middle East. Papal Journey Begins

Pope Leo XIV boarded an ITA charter flight, an Airbus A320 neo, to commence this significant journey. The flight left for Ankara, where he is set to deliver his first speech as Pope. The papal delegation, comprising around 80 international journalists, will accompany him throughout the trip, capturing the essence of this historic visit.

Interestingly, as the trip coincides with Thanksgiving in the United States, some journalists have brought pumpkin pies aboard the flight in hopes of sharing a taste of home with the Pope.
