Ryan Walters Resigns to Lead Conservative Educators Group
Ryan Walters, the top public schools official in Oklahoma, has announced his resignation to take on the role of CEO at the Teacher Freedom Alliance, a nonprofit aimed at supporting conservative educators. This decision comes as Walters, a Republican, has been a prominent figure in the state’s education landscape, often advocating for policies aligned with his conservative values.
On September 27, 2023, during an interview on Fox News, Walters stated that he will step down from his position as state superintendent of public instruction, a role he has held since his election in 2023. He emphasized his commitment to “destroying the teachers unions,” which he claims have corrupted public schools through the misuse of money and power.
Walters’ tenure has been marked by controversial initiatives that aim to inject conservative ideologies into Oklahoma’s educational system. He has called for the establishment of Turning Point USA chapters in every high school, an organization founded by Charlie Kirk to mobilize young conservative voices. In his view, these chapters will foster an environment conducive to discussions on free speech and American values.
Throughout his time in office, Walters has sought to incorporate religious content into the curriculum, including a mandate for public schoolteachers to integrate the Bible into lesson plans for students in grades 5 through 12. His agenda has also included proposals to promote conspiracy theories surrounding the 2020 election, track the immigration status of students, and require teachers from states like California and New York to undergo assessments aimed at identifying what he describes as “radical leftist ideology.”
Such efforts have not gone without challenges. Walters has faced multiple lawsuits related to his policies, while Oklahoma’s performance in various national education rankings has reportedly declined. In a recent announcement, he confirmed the formation of Turning Point USA chapters in Oklahoma high schools, asserting that parents, teachers, and students desire engagement in meaningful dialogues about American ideals.
Oklahoma Attorney General Genter Drummond criticized Walters’ leadership, highlighting a “stream of never-ending scandal and political drama.” In a statement, he called for a state superintendent who will prioritize quality instruction in public schools, indicating a desire for change within the education system.
As Walters transitions to the Teacher Freedom Alliance, he leaves behind a complex legacy characterized by significant political drama and a focus on culture-war issues. His future endeavors will likely continue to shape the landscape of education in Oklahoma and beyond.
