Sri Lanka Unveils 3,563-Carat Purple Star Sapphire Worth $300M

A remarkable purple star sapphire weighing an astonishing 3,563 carats was unveiled on October 14, 2023, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The gem, which is touted as the largest of its kind, is now on the market with an estimated value of at least $300 million. The owners, known as the Star of Pure Land Team, have opted to remain anonymous for security reasons.

The round-shaped gem, named the “Star of Pure Land,” stands out as the world’s largest documented natural purple star sapphire. According to Ashan Amarasinghe, a consultant gemologist, the stone features a well-defined asterism with six distinct rays, setting it apart from other gemstones. Amarasinghe stated, “This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind,” emphasizing its unique characteristics.

The gem was discovered in a gem pit near the town of Rathnapura, known as the “city of gems,” in 2023. Initially purchased alongside other gemstones, it took the owners about two years to recognize its extraordinary value. After undergoing evaluation, the sapphire was certified by two laboratories, confirming its status and worth.

Valuation experts have estimated the sapphire’s value to range between $300 million and $400 million. Sri Lankan sapphires are renowned globally for their unique color, clarity, and shimmer, making them highly sought after in the luxury market.
