Vietnam-based start-up airline, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, has made a significant move in its quest for global expansion by ordering up to 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets. This order is pivotal as it positions the airline to develop a robust operational network and aims to achieve a fleet size of 100 aircraft by 2030. The introduction of the Boeing 787, known for its fuel efficiency and innovative design, is expected to provide the foundation for the airline’s long-haul international travel plans.

Strategic Order and Fleet Expansion

The order for the Dreamliner jets aligns with Sun PhuQuoc Airways’ vision to connect major international destinations from its hub at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) located in the southwest of Vietnam. The Boeing 787-9 is the most popular variant in the Dreamliner family, capable of carrying up to 296 passengers over distances of 7,565 nautical miles (approximately 14,010 kilometers). This operational range allows the airline to extend its reach across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Australasia, and North America.

In a press statement, Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, emphasized the advantages of the 787-9, stating, “The 787-9’s unmatched range, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort will give the airline flexibility to open new long-haul markets, lower operating costs, and contribute to local tourism growth.”

Current Operations and Future Aspirations

Launched in November 2025 following the receipt of its operational certificate from Vietnam’s aviation authorities in September, Sun PhuQuoc Airways began its journey with a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. Since its inception, the airline has quickly established a domestic presence, currently operating a fleet of 10 aircraft, which includes both used Airbus A320neo and A321 aircraft, alongside newly delivered A321neo models.

Currently, the airline connects four major airports: Hanoi International Airport (HAN), Da Nang International Airport (DAD), Ho Chi Minh City International Airport (SGN), and its base at Phu Quoc. Plans are in place for the airline’s fleet to comprise a mix of 60 Airbus narrowbody aircraft paired with the 40 Boeing widebody jets, enhancing its network capabilities significantly.

Looking ahead, the first of the Dreamliner aircraft is anticipated to arrive by 2030, marking a crucial milestone in the airline’s ambitious expansion strategy. According to fleet forecast data, the global aviation market is expected to see 46,500 new aircraft delivered by 2044, valued at $3.4 trillion.

Boeing’s recent success extends beyond Sun PhuQuoc Airways, as the manufacturer has also secured additional orders for 65 jets from other airlines, including a significant deal with Air Astana for up to 15 Boeing 787-9 aircraft and another order from Vietnam Airlines for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets.

These deals not only contribute to the expansion of the airlines’ fleets but also facilitate modernization efforts, with Air Astana replacing older Boeing 767 widebody aircraft. The order from Vietnam Airlines marks a noteworthy transition as its narrowbody fleet has been exclusively comprised of Airbus aircraft.

As the airline industry in Southeast Asia continues to evolve, these developments underscore a growing confidence in the market’s potential. With increasing air travel demand projected, both Boeing and the airlines involved are poised for significant growth in the coming years.
