The suspect in the shooting death of former Oakland community college football coach John Beam made his initial court appearance on Tuesday in Oakland, California. Cedric Irving Jr., 27, faces charges of murder along with several enhancements related to Beam’s death. He is currently being held without bail and could face a sentence ranging from 50 years to life in prison if found guilty.

During the court session, Irving did not enter a plea. His next court date is scheduled for December 16, 2023. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, which occurred at Laney College, where Beam had a long-standing and impactful career.

Beam, 66, was highly regarded in the community, known as a father figure to many of his players. His coaching tenure at Laney College included multiple championship runs, and he was featured in the Netflix docuseries “Last Chance U” during its 2020 season. After retiring from coaching last year, he served as the school’s athletic director.

On the day of the incident, police responded to reports of a shooting at Laney College shortly before noon. Officers found Beam suffering from a gunshot wound to the head at the athletics field house. Despite being transported to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Irving was apprehended early on Friday morning at a commuter rail station, just after 3 a.m.. According to a probable cause document, he was found in possession of the firearm used in Beam’s shooting and admitted to committing the act. The Oakland Police Department characterized the shooting as “very targeted.”

This incident has heightened concerns over safety in Oakland, a city of approximately 400,000 residents. Just a day prior, a student was shot at Skyline High School, marking a troubling week for the community.

Beam joined Laney College in 2004 as a running backs coach before becoming the head coach in 2012. Under his leadership, the team won two league titles, and at least 20 of his players progressed to the National Football League (NFL). His legacy as a mentor and coach left a significant mark on the local community.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure who played a crucial role in the lives of many young athletes.
