United Airlines Expands Partnership with GE Aerospace for 787 Fleet
United Airlines has announced a significant expansion of its partnership with GE Aerospace, opting to acquire an additional 300 GEnx engines to power its growing fleet of Boeing 787 aircraft. This new agreement reinforces United’s commitment to enhancing its operations, bringing the total number of GEnx engines in the airline’s fleet to 200 as it continues to expand its 787 Dreamliner operations.
The GEnx engine, renowned for its durability and reliability, boasts an impressive dispatch rate of over 99.98%. The engine is critical to the performance of many long-haul flights using the 787 and remains a preferred choice among airlines globally. With this partnership, United Airlines solidifies its status as the largest operator of GEnx engines in the world.
Long-standing Collaboration and Future Growth
United Airlines and GE Aerospace have maintained a collaborative relationship since 1968, utilizing a range of engines across their fleet, including the CF6, GE90, and LEAP. The recent agreement reflects United’s confidence in GE Aerospace, which has achieved over 70 million hours of operational time with the GEnx engine, now powering more than two-thirds of all active Boeing 787 aircraft.
According to Mohamed Ali, President & CEO of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines & Services, “This deal will make United the largest GEnx operator in the world, and we’re honored they continue to choose us to power their success.” The partnership not only enhances United’s fleet but also highlights the reliability of the GEnx engine, which has proven to be a cornerstone for many airlines.
United Airlines operates a diverse fleet of more than 81 Boeing 787 aircraft, with the largest variant being the 787-9, which currently has 48 units in operation. The airline also has 140 more 787s on order, which will feature upgraded interiors, including the latest Polaris cabin and advanced entertainment systems.
Benefits of the GEnx Engine
The GEnx engine stands out not only for its performance but also for its environmental efficiency. It offers a 1.4% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions annually compared to competing engines on a 3,000 nautical mile flight. This efficiency is partly due to advanced materials used in its design, which reduce the engine’s weight by approximately 136 kg while increasing its lifespan and reliability.
Additionally, the GEnx features innovative technology such as composite fan blades and the first FAA-approved 3D printed component, showcasing GE’s commitment to engineering excellence. The engine’s design allows for three times the lifespan on wing and minimizes operational disruptions, providing airlines with greater efficiency and aircraft availability.
As United Airlines prepares for future deliveries, the latest order of GEnx engines ensures that the airline remains at the forefront of aviation technology and sustainability. The partnership with GE Aerospace is set to enhance operational capabilities and support the airline’s growth ambitions in the competitive aviation market.
