United Airlines Launches Starlink Connectivity on 737 Flights

United Airlines is set to enhance passenger connectivity by introducing Starlink Wi-Fi on its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with the first commercial flight scheduled for October 15, 2025. This marks a significant step for the airline as it aims to offer high-speed internet service at cruising altitudes, enhancing the in-flight experience for travelers.
Certification and Launch Plans
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the installation of Starlink systems on United’s Boeing 737-800 fleet. The inaugural flight will depart from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and is expected to provide passengers with complimentary Wi-Fi speeds of up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps). As of now, United operates 141 Boeing 737-800s, which have an average age of 21.6 years, according to data from ch-aviation.
The certification process for Starlink was completed just five months after United’s first regional jet, an Embraer E175, successfully flew with the upgraded system. The airline has been proactive in securing FAA approval for Starlink across its fleet, which includes plans to equip its entire regional fleet with the new technology.
Aiming for Comprehensive Connectivity
United Airlines has ambitious plans to provide complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi to all MileagePlus loyalty program members across both mainline and regional flights. The partnership with SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, aims to revolutionize in-flight connectivity. Grant Milstead, United’s Vice President of Digital Technology, commented on the launch: “Customers are loving the Starlink experience onboard our regional aircraft, and our first Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft will bring a superior inflight experience to even more people.”
The installation of Starlink is not only focused on providing faster internet but also aims to reduce aircraft weight and fuel consumption, making it a more efficient option for the airline. Achieving a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the FAA for each aircraft model is part of United’s strategy, as the airline operates over 16 different types of aircraft. The installation process for Starlink takes about four days, significantly shorter than the ten days required for traditional Wi-Fi systems.
Industry Trends in In-Flight Connectivity
The push for better in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity is a growing trend across the aviation industry as airlines respond to increasing passenger demand. Alongside United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines has successfully integrated Starlink Wi-Fi, becoming the first airline to offer this service on its Airbus A321 and A330-200 fleets.
Additionally, Alaska Airlines, following its merger with Hawaiian Airlines, plans to introduce Starlink across its fleet starting in 2026, with full implementation by 2027. Internationally, carriers such as airBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, Qatar Airways, WestJet, ZIPAIR, and Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) are also collaborating with SpaceX to enhance their connectivity offerings.
As United Airlines moves forward with its Starlink rollout, passengers can look forward to an upgraded travel experience that combines speed, efficiency, and enhanced entertainment options at 35,000 feet. The introduction of this technology reflects a significant shift in how airlines approach in-flight services, emphasizing the importance of connectivity in today’s travel landscape.
