Windsor Goodfellows Launch Annual Newspaper Drive for Charity
The Windsor Goodfellows are set to embark on their annual newspaper drive from November 27 to 29, 2023, distributing special-edition newspapers across local streets and intersections in exchange for donations. This fundraising initiative, which relies on a strong partnership with the Windsor Star that has lasted for over 115 years, is expected to involve more than 400 volunteers from Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” stated Steve Harrison, chair of Old Newsboys Paper Sales. The organization aims to raise $375,000, a figure that reflects the success of previous years, where they raised $366,000 in 2022. Contributions will support the organization’s Christmas hampers and various year-round programs, including a food bank.
The drive is not just a fundraiser; it is a community event that fosters goodwill and support among residents. “The amount of people that show up every year and welcome us by donating both their time and money toward this program is astounding,” said Siobhan Brennan, chair of the Windsor Goodfellows marketing committee. “Every year it just gets better and better.”
To facilitate donations, Walmart locations in Windsor and Zehrs stores in LaSalle and Tecumseh will introduce new tap-to-donate terminals. This innovation caters to those who may not have cash on hand, making it easier for community members to contribute.
The tradition of the newspaper drive, which began in partnership with the Windsor Star in 1914, remains a cornerstone of the Goodfellows’ mission. “The Windsor Goodfellows extend heartfelt gratitude to the Windsor Star for its many years of steadfast partnership,” the charity noted in a statement.
The organization operates on Tuesdays and Fridays, and donations can be made around the clock by placing contributions through the mail slot at their headquarters located at 401 Park St. W. The community’s continued support is crucial for maintaining this long-standing tradition that helps those in need during the holiday season and beyond.
